Air is a tricky element.
On the surface, air seems easy, light and uncomplicated. It can be, but only if we also experience its opposites: difficult, heavy and complicated. Strange, I know. But that’s what makes Air complex—it’s the experience of perceived opposites.
In alchemy, we come to the separation operation once we have brought to the surface all that has been hidden away in the EARTH and WATER elements. We have gone through the physical acts of digging, unearthing, diving, swimming and now we are asked to go to more subtle work—perceiving, observing, reviewing, sorting through.
Air and separation ask us now to look at that which is being revealed through work with the denser elements, EARTH, WATER, and FIRE. Now we look at what we are composed of. Now is the moment of truth.
Have you ever seen an archeological dig?
Archeologists work through layers and layers of earth in order to reveal the truth about a life that was lived in a particular spot. In order to get an idea of the story of the place, they need to bring objects, skeletons, fragments of bone to the surface.
Once they have observed and analyzed their findings within the context in which they were found, they start to bring their findings out of context, lay them out, in order to SEE, in order to clearly observe what exactly it is that they have discovered. Then they start to separate out significant finding from less significant finding. They are now able to construct a more COMPLETE picture.
Separation is absolutely necessary for spiritual alchemists.
In order to evolve consciously, we must be willing to lay everything out in front of us. We must be willing to see clearly, to separate out that which truly part of our essence and that which is artificial.
We must review that which is significant and that which is less significant in the context of our true essence.
We must be willing to see what we have deemed good or bad, positive or negative, those parts of ourselves that we have judged as desirable or un-desirable.
As we bring to the surface that which we have labeled good and bad, positive and negative, we come to the realization that UNITY is really underlying the duality created by the mind. We come to understand the non-dualistic point of of view (tantra) and that perceived opposites are really qualities on a spectrum of all qualities.
As we perceive the whole, we see the interconnected web of all aspects. This point of view or realization is only possible when we are willing to bring to light and accept that which we have falsely labeled good and bad or positive and negative.
We have to be willing to give up the illusion of our personality, who we think we are, in order to reach our gold, our true selves.
Only when we are willing to SEE, only when we come into contact with our opposites can we move towards wholeness. We can only reach union by first separating, by first seeing what there is to see.

I unify the polarizing opposites of my being, yin and yang, feminine and masculine, light and dark, receptive and active, creative and destructive. I am whole.

I want you first work with your EARTH, WATER and FIRE elements. Find out what needs to be found out. Bring it all up to the surface with courage, compassion and willingness to see what you are all about. Then, review, sort, and release that which you no longer need and integrate that which needs integration.
